Peking University International Exchange Students' Traditional Festival-themed Reading Club

On October 22, the Department of International Cooperation of Peking University held the "International Exchange Students at Peking University: Traditional Festival Theme Reading Club". The reading club was delivered by Mr. Xu Yangfan from the School of Chinese as a Foreign Language Education of Peking University, and was divided into two sessions: "Mid-Autumn Festival Reunion" and "Double Ninth Festival Respect for the Elderly", which attracted international students from the United States, India, Germany, Australia and other countries.

The full moon is reunited, and the culture is inherited

With the theme of "reunion", the "Mid-Autumn Festival" reading club started from the origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival and introduced its deep connection with agricultural production and the tradition of moon worship. Through the explanation of the Chinese characters "Qiu" and "Ming", the internal logic of Chinese characters and culture is vividly demonstrated.

Then, the teacher explained the development of the Mid-Autumn Festival and festival customs, and watched the brewing process of osmanthus wine with the students. Students actively understand the cultural connotation of the Mid-Autumn Festival in activities such as guessing lantern riddles and reading poems. The teacher also led everyone to appreciate the classic poems of Li Bai's "Quiet Night Thoughts" and Su Shi's "Water Tune Song Head", and felt the emotional resonance spanning thousands of years.

Respect the elderly and filial piety, climb high and look far away

In the reading club of the Chongyang Festival, the teacher started with Chinese digital culture, explained that "nine" is the yang number, and the ninth day of September is called "Chongyang", and derived the cultural connotation of "respect for the elderly". Through the evolution of the oracle bone inscription of the word "filial piety", she explained the Chinese family concept of "providing for the elderly and relying on the elderly" in simple terms.
The students learned about the customs of climbing Chongyang, planting dogwood, appreciating chrysanthemums, eating Chongyang cakes, etc., and learned to sing Wang Wei's "Remembering Shandong Brothers on September 9th", and experienced the homesickness of "thinking of relatives every festival" in the poems.

Cultural integration and heart-to-heart connection

This event enriched the campus cultural life of international students and injected new vitality into the international dissemination of excellent traditional Chinese culture. Through the lectures on the "Mid-Autumn Festival" and "Double Ninth Festival", the students systematically learned the origin and customs of Chinese festivals, and they said that they not only "learned knowledge", but also "felt emotions", and understood the cultural core of "reunion" and "respect for the elderly", so as to further enter the spiritual world of Chinese people and enhance cross-cultural understanding and empathy.
