On April 16, the International Student Management Office of Sichuan University (SCU) organized 75 international students from 21 countries to visit Dujiangyan and the front mountain of Mount Qingcheng for a “Sensing China” cultural experience activity. Themed “Worshiping the Water at Dujiangyan, Seeking the Way at Mount Qingcheng,” the event aimed to give students a first-hand look at Ancient Shu Civilization, witness China’s achievements in ecological civilization, and experience the unique charm of traditional Chinese culture.
The group departed from SCU’s Wangjiang Campus at 8:30 AM. Upon arriving at the Dujiangyan scenic area around 10:00 AM, students toured the world-renowned ancient irrigation system led by a professional guide. While visiting key sites like the Yuzui (Fish Mouth) Levee, Feishayan (Flying Sand) Spillway, and Baopingkou (Precious Bottle Neck), the students gained a deep understanding of the ancient Chinese wisdom of “channeling according to the terrain” and “harmony between humanity and nature.” As one of the earliest successful examples of coexistence between humans and the environment, Dujiangyan showcased its multi-dimensional value in technology, ecology, and culture, leaving the students in awe of this enduring legacy of Chinese governance.
In the afternoon, the students explored the front mountain of Mount Qingcheng. Known for its serene environment, the mountain features ancient Taoist architectural complexes that blend seamlessly with the natural landscape. As they climbed, students visited historic sites such as Tianshi Cave and Shangqing Palace. Under the guidance of their mentors, they experienced the essence of indigenous Chinese religion—”following the laws of nature”—and appreciated the tranquility of “natural perfection and the unity of heaven and man.”
Following the activity, the international students expressed that this cultural journey provided them with a vivid and profound impression of Dujiangyan’s hydraulic engineering and the Taoist culture of Mount Qingcheng. It significantly enhanced their understanding of Chinese history and philosophy. The SCU International Student Management Office plans to launch a series of similar cultural experience activities this month to help international students better perceive, understand, and identify with China.
