On the eve of the Qingming Festival, the “2026 Expats Perceiving Chengdu” event series officially kicked off in Chongzhou. Organized by the Chengdu Municipal Education Bureau and the Foreign Affairs Office, the event welcomed over 20 international students from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC). The students embarked on an immersive journey through Daoming Bamboo Art Village, Baita Lake, and Tianfu Wine Village, experiencing the charm of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) and the new vitality of rural revitalization.
Touching the Thousand-Year Art of Bamboo Weaving
The journey began at Daoming Bamboo Art Village, the birthplace of the national-level ICH “Daoming Bamboo Weaving.” Under the expert guidance of Master Yang Longmei, students tried their hands at the complete process—from selecting bamboo strips to weaving and finishing. This hands-on experience allowed them to feel the intricate beauty of this ancient “art at the fingertips.”
Vibrant Atmosphere at the “Village Sugar & Wine Fair”
In the afternoon, the team headed to the Tianfu Wine Village for the inaugural 2026 Chengdu “Village Sugar & Wine Fair.” Set amidst blooming flower fields, the students explored a bustling rural market featuring over 300 booths. They immersed themselves in the joyful spring festivities and the dynamic energy of the Western Sichuan Plain.
Tasting History at the Century-Old Distillery
The final stop was the Chongyang 1886 Ancient Cellar Distillery, which boasts a history spanning over a century. Standing beside Qing Dynasty cellars, students sampled fresh wine crafted using the Sichuan Provincial ICH “Chongyang Wine Brewing Technique.” They savored the profound “Poetry and Wine” culture that defines Chengdu’s heritage.
Bridging Cultures through Personal Experience
This cultural tour served as a vivid lesson for UESTC international students, transforming abstract “Chinese culture” into tangible life experiences. By participating in traditional crafts and witnessing rural development, these students have become firsthand storytellers of Chengdu’s friendly, open, and inclusive image.
The School of International Education at UESTC remains committed to supporting such cultural exchange activities. By encouraging students to act as bridges, the university continues to help shape and spread Chengdu’s international image to the world.
