Recently, the International Students Office of Beijing Normal University (BNU) organized a cultural excursion for its international students to the Huanghuacheng Water Great Wall in Huairou District, Beijing. This unique section of the Great Wall, known for its rare “water-immersed” landscape, provided students with a perfect blend of historical grandeur and natural beauty.
A Unique Encounter with History and Nature
Unlike other sections of the Great Wall, Huanghuacheng is celebrated for its three distinct features: the ancient wall encircling the mountains, the majestic wall submerged in the lake, and the scenic lakeside views. As the students hiked along the rugged Ming Dynasty stones, they were captivated by the sight of the “submerged wall,” where the Great Wall meets the shimmering waters of the Haoming Lake.
Immersive Cultural Learning
During the visit, students from various countries engaged in deep discussions about the architectural wisdom of ancient China. Guided by the breathtaking scenery, they learned about the strategic importance of this fortress during the Ming Dynasty. The hike also provided an excellent opportunity for cross-cultural communication, as students shared their impressions of Chinese heritage while navigating the steep, historic paths.
“Seeing the Great Wall directly touching the water was a surreal experience,” shared one student from the program. “It’s not just a hike; it’s a living history lesson that makes us feel more connected to China’s past.”
Strengthening the BNU Global Community
This excursion is part of BNU’s “Perceiving China” series, aimed at helping international students better understand Chinese culture and society. By stepping out of the classroom and into the “Cloud and Water” of Huanghuacheng, students not only relieved their academic stress but also built lasting friendships within the BNU international community.
