Renmin University of China International Students Visit the Great Wall in Beijing!

Spring is in the air, and all things are waking up. March 31st marked the peak viewing season for the spring blossoms at the Juyongguan section of the Great Wall. Organized by the International Student Steering Group Office, nearly 50 international students from 25 countries—including France, Italy, Russia, Ethiopia, and Malaysia—visited Juyongguan in Changping District, Beijing. Amidst the sea of mountain flowers, they began a spring journey integrating natural scenery, historical heritage, and international friendship, using the Great Wall as a medium to feel the majesty and elegance of Chinese civilization.

  1. Admiring the “Juyong Overlapping Emerald” Amidst Spring Flowers
As a vital pass of the Great Wall, Juyongguan stretches approximately 4.1 kilometers. Surrounded by mountains and lush forests, it has been famous since ancient times for the “Juyong Overlapping Emerald” (Juyong Diecui) scenery, topping the “Eight Great Sights of Yanjing.”

In full spring, peach and apricot blossoms bloom in competition, appearing like rosy clouds interweaving with the winding Great Wall, creating the stunning “Train Bound for Spring” landscape. From afar, the emerald peaks roll into the horizon; up close, flower branches sway with a floating fragrance. Students strolled between the sea of flowers and the ancient stone, experiencing the thousand-year-old poetry and vitality of Beijing’s springtime.

  1. Scaling the Heights: Sensing the Rhythm of Civilization
Following the ancient stone steps, the students began their climb. Known as the “First Impregnable Pass under Heaven,” Juyongguan’s strategic terrain and military architecture—including north and south enclosure walls and watchtowers—form a rigorous defense system. Every mottled brick is etched with history, whispering stories of its past as a crucial military throat and cultural hub.

The climb was steep, but students from different nations encouraged and supported one another. This spirit of mutual aid became a unique sight on the Great Wall. While some were breathless, they persisted; others gazed into the distance at the magnificent mountains, and some quietly touched the weathered bricks to feel the resilient spirit of the Chinese nation. As they climbed higher, the view broadened, revealing the Great Wall as a witness to the continuous flow of Chinese civilization.

  1. Reflections from the Students
GAIROLA ATHARV (India, Chinese Language Student):
“I’ve visited several sections of the Great Wall, like Badaling and Mutianyu, but Juyongguan is my favorite. The mountains stand right before you, and the Wall follows the ridge upward. Standing at the top makes me feel grounded. It’s quiet here; you can sit on a step, look at the Cloud Platform carvings, and touch the walls polished by time. If you have a sense for history, you can hear the wind whispering stories. This is the most lingering part of the Wall for me.”

STEPANENKO LADA (Russia, School of Journalism):
“The Great Wall is a breathtaking miracle; it’s like a direct window into Chinese history. Standing on these ancient walls makes your imagination run wild, thinking about life here in the past. This experience is precious and has allowed me to deeply understand the charm and weight of Chinese culture.”

HAI ABDUL-KADIR MAKAME (Tanzania, Master’s Student, School of Journalism):
“Visiting Juyongguan feels amazing. As you walk up the steps and look out over the mountains, you can really see how huge and impressive the Wall is. The big gate tower, with its colorful roof and solid stone base, makes the whole area feel even more special. It’s easy to imagine how important this pass was long ago. Together, the scenery and the buildings create a calm, powerful moment to appreciate the strong spirit of this place.”

OLEKSENKO TAISIIA (Russia, Chinese Language Student):
“Yesterday I climbed the Great Wall! I’ve dreamed about this since I was little. It’s not just an attraction; it appeared to me as a miracle. The climb wasn’t easy, but when you see the magnificent view and the endless stairs made centuries ago, it’s impossible to put into words. It felt like an ancient Chinese legend in real life. I will cherish these memories forever. Thank you, RUC!”

Looking Forward
This spring trip to Juyongguan allowed international students to not only appreciate the unique charm of China’s landscape but also to deepen their understanding of Chinese history and strengthen their friendships. In the future, the International Student Steering Group Office will continue to host diverse practical activities, leading international students to “Read China” and “Perceive China” through authentic, real-world experiences.

💡 Pro-Tip for your Website:
In your “Life in China” section, you could use the quote from Oleksenko Taiisiia as a standout testimonial: “It felt like an ancient Chinese legend in real life.” This is incredibly persuasive for high school students who dream of a “magical” study abroad experience!
