Yunnan University International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Program 2026

To meet the growing international demand for Chinese language teachers, facilitate Chinese language education around the world, and support the professional development of Chinese language teachers, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) has established the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (hereinafter referred to as the Scholarship) for eligible Chinese language teachers outside of China. Yunnan University as one of the host institutions, welcomes all the Recommending Institutions recommend outstanding students and in-service Chinese language teachers to further their studies in international Chinese language education and related programs in YNU with the Scholarship.

I. Eligibility

  1. Be a non-Chinese citizen;2. Be friendly to China, have no criminal record, abide by the laws and regulations of China and Yunnan University;3. Be in good physical and mental health, be in good academic and behavioral standing;4. Be interested in Chinese language education and related work; and5. Be aged between 16 and 35 years on September 1, 2025. The maximum age limit for in-service Chinese teachers may be extended to 45.
    II. Categories and Application Requirement1. Scholarship for Master’s Degree in International Chinese Language EducationThis program provides sponsorship for 2 academic years. Applicants shall hold a Bachelor’s degree. Applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK test (Level 5) and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level). Priority will be given to applicants who may provide an employment contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or proof to the same effect.2. Scholarship for One-Year Study ProgramThis program provides scholarship for a maximum of 11 months. Applicants who had the same scholarship within 3 years will not be admitted.a) International Chinese language education:Applicants shall have a minimum score of 270 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.b) Chinese Language:Applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK test (Level 3), and priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.3. Scholarship for One-Semester Study ProgramThis program provides sponsorship of a maximum of 5 months. Applicants who had the same scholarship within 3 years will not be admitted.a) International Chinese language education:Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.4. Scholarship for Four-Week Study ProgramThis program provides scholarship for 4 weeks. Applicants shall submit an HSK score report. This program provides Chinese language & culture course to student group (10 to15 participants) which should be organized by a Recommending Institution. The Recommending Institution should contact with TJU to negotiate the study plan in advance, and such plan shall be submitted to CLEC for review and approval.
    III. Scholarship CoverageFull International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship supports tuition, accommodation, living allowance and comprehensive medical insurance.Note:1. Degree students are subject to the annual assessment according to the Annual Assessment Procedures of the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship.2. Students who fail to pass the pre-enrollment medical examination, withdraw from school before completing the program, fail to register at the university without prior permission, or suspend their studies will be disqualified for the scholarship.
    IV. Application Procedure
    Step1Online registration need to be completed both on the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship application website (cis.chinese.cn)Application steps are as follows:For International Chinese Teachers Scholarship Application Website:Online registration will be available from March 1, 2026 on the website( cis.chinese.cn). Applicants can log on the website to look for Recommending Institutions and choose Yunnan University as the Host Institutions, and then complete and submit application materials online, and upload scanned copies of relevant supporting documents.Step2CLEC will entrust an expert panel to review the applications. The results will be published about three months before the program starts.Step3Applicants can check the application process, materials review and admission results on line. The scholarship applicants could print their scholarship certificate online.Step4YNU will confirm the admission with the applicants according to the results of the review.Step5Scholarship winners shall register for admission in accordance with the time, method and procedure specified in the admission notice of YNU.Note:The deadline is as follows((Beijing time):

1.In-Service Chinese Language Teachers  Priority will be given to the In-service Chinese language teachers if they provide proof of employment and a letter of recommendation from the employer.2. Chinese Bridge Winners Applicants who have received the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate during Chinese Bridge competitions may submit their application documents along with their scholarship certificates to the Host Institutions directly at the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website.For any further inquiries, please contact [email protected].
VI.Application Documents
Recommending institutions need to complete the whole application procedure and make sure the name, nationality, and permanent address of the applicant are correct. If the following documents are not in Chinese or English, notarization documents should be provided.1. A scanned copy of the passport photo page.2. Applicants under the age of 18 shall submit certified documents of designation signed by their entrusted legal guardians in China.3. A Scanned copy of score reports of the HSK/HSKK tests (within the two-year validity).4. A reference letter signed by the head of the Recommending Institution.5. Applicants for a Master’s Degree in International Chinese Language Education are required to submit notarized certificate pf the highest diploma (or proof of expected  graduation) and notarized academic transcript.6. Applicants for a Master’s Degree in International Chinese Language Education are required to submit two reference letters from professors or associate professors (in Chinese or English). Priority will be given to applicants who may provide an employment contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China.7. In-service Chinese language teachers shall provide proof of employment and a reference letter from the employer.8. Applicants who have received the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate during Chinese Bridge competitions need to submit their application documents along with their scholarship certificates.
VII. Disclaimer1.Incomplete or unqualified application materials will not be processed.2. Applicants will be disqualified from application in case of fraudulent application materials or application materials are completed and submitted by someone else.3. Scholarship winners who cannot register with YNU on time should inform us about the reasons in written form within 15 days before the admission date. For those who do not register as requested without reason, the scholarship will be canceled.4. Scholarship will be canceled for those who do not pass the admission physical examination, drop out, or take schooling suspension during the study.
