On the evening of November 8, the first Chinese Conference for International Students in China of Wuhan University was warmly opened in the lecture hall of the School of International Education. More than 50 2025 English-taught master's and doctoral students from more than ten countries including Australia, Pakistan, Latvia, and Vietnam gathered with Chinese student volunteers majoring in Chinese international education from our school to start a new journey of Chinese language learning in a fun and interactive way.
This Chinese conference focuses on practical speaking and Chinese cultural perception, including four step-by-step experiential learning sections. The activities are carried out in small groups, with Chinese student volunteers as the leader of each group carrying out learning tasks. At the beginning of the activity, the international students practiced basic Chinese self-introduction under the guidance of the group leader: "Hello, my name is ......, I am from ......, and my major is ......", which quickly broke the sense of strangeness and built the first bridge of cross-cultural dialogue.
The subsequent "Global Hello Relay" session was even more interesting, "Hello!" “Bonjour!”“ Hola!” Greetings in various languages are intertwined, and everyone learns from each other's greeting methods, and the lecture hall has become a "miniature global village" with diversity and integration. In the "Chinese Character Treasure Hunt" activity, the students looked at the pictures and read the words, and carefully learned common words in life such as "school", "hospital", "restaurant" and "passport". The team leaders carefully guided on the side, demonstrating the correct pinyin and strokes, while explaining the origin and structure of Chinese characters, so that each square character became three-dimensional and vivid. The next "Thunder Stepping Challenge" pushed the atmosphere to a climax. The screen presents a neatly arranged Chinese character matrix, and each group takes turns to read it, while the randomly hidden "bomb" adds infinite suspense to the game. Whenever a classmate unfortunately "touches thunder", he needs to contribute a song.
For a while, there was singing and applause in the lecture hall, and the tense Chinese character competition turned into a transnational cultural exchange full of laughter and talent. The finale of the "Charming China, Colorful Wuhan" learning session reignited the warm atmosphere of the scene. When pictures carrying Wuhan customs and traditional Chinese culture, such as the Yellow Crane Tower, hot dry noodles, Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, cheongsam, and Peking Opera, were displayed on the big screen, the international students rushed to raise their hands and eagerly answer: "This is the Yellow Crane Tower!" I've been! "Hot dry noodles are delicious!" After that, under the leadership of the host, the students read the famous sentence of the Tang Dynasty poet Cui Hao in unison, "The ancients have gone on the Yellow Crane, and the Yellow Crane Tower is empty here......", which echoed in the lecture hall, adding a touch of elegant poetry to this language and cultural exchange activity.
The more than two-hour event came to an end with laughter, and many students stayed at the scene to continue communicating. One classmate shared, "I was worried about saying the wrong thing, but in such a friendly environment, even if I said something wrong, everyone would help me, and now I am more confident that I can learn Chinese well." Another student also said: "Tonight is not only a language class, but also the beginning of friendship, and I have met friends from all over the world through Chinese, which is a wonderful feeling." ”
In the future, Wuhan University's "Building Dreams of Chinese, Talking about Friendship" Chinese Conference will continue to be promoted as a series of brand activities, and the college will design diversified learning activities according to different student types and Chinese language foundations, continue to create a high-quality language practice and cultural experience platform for international students in China, and do a solid job in the cultivation of international talents in Zhihua Youhua.
