
On November 29, the "New Opportunities, New Explorations: Forum on International Communication Talent Cultivation and Integrated Innovation Research" was held at Fudan University. The forum was co-hosted by the newly established School of International Communication and Global Leadership of Fudan University (hereinafter referred to as the "School of International Communication") and the School of Journalism of Fudan University. At the opening ceremony of the forum, the unveiling ceremony of the School of International Communication and Global Leadership of Fudan University was held.
Guests from relevant departments of the Central Government and the state, central state-owned enterprises, relevant departments of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, as well as Fudan University and other parties from government, media, enterprises, and universities, deans of well-known journalism and communication schools across the country, and industry experts in the field of international communication gathered together to discuss the cultivation of international communication talents and integrated innovation.
01 Strengthen Interdisciplinary Integration, Jointly Build an Innovative New Model for International Communication Talent Cultivation by Government, Media, Enterprises, and Universities
In his speech, the relevant responsible comrade of the International Communication Bureau of the Central Propaganda Department stated that the cultivation of international communication talents needs to adhere to the value coordinate of "national stance and global perspective", build a training system of "disciplinary integration and unity of knowledge and practice", embrace the development trend of "technology empowerment and model innovation", and create a development ecosystem of "openness, inclusiveness, coordination, and efficiency". He hoped that colleges and universities would play a leading role in innovating talent cultivation models and researching integrated communication theories, and jointly promote the discipline construction of international communication to a new level.
Ma Xiaohong, Vice Minister of the Publicity Department of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, emphasized the importance of cultivating a compound talent team that is "familiar with Chinese culture, has a global perspective, and is proficient in interdisciplinary skills". Ma Xiaohong highly praised the exploratory practice of Fudan's School of International Communication and looked forward to the forum injecting new impetus into building a collaborative education system of "government, industry, and universities" and promoting intelligent communication research and the construction of Shanghai's international communication highland.
Chen Zhimin, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of Fudan University, Vice President of Fudan University, and Dean of the School of International Communication and Global Leadership of Fudan University, introduced the innovative measures of Fudan University to integrate multi-disciplinary resources of the whole university to establish the School of International Communication. This is a profound reform to break down disciplinary barriers and innovate the training system, aiming to build a new highland for cultivating international communication talents that is interdisciplinary, high-level, practical, and has both a Chinese heart and a global vision, and to cultivate compound strategic communication talents.
The School of International Communication will build a comprehensive, multi-level, and wide-ranging collaborative innovation community of "government, industry, academia, research, application, and service", forming a full-chain and multi-type industry-education integration talent cultivation partner matrix. Representatives of the co-building units attending this event: Zhang Yong, Deputy General Manager and Member of the Party Group of China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company; Wang Yongqian, Secretary of the Party Group and President of Xinhua News Agency Shanghai Branch; Yang Jun, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Cyberspace Administration and First-Class Inspector; Chen Yiqun, Director of the Shanghai Municipal Foreign Affairs Publicity Office (Government Information Office), together with Chen Zhimin and Chen Yan, Assistant President of Fudan University and Executive Vice Dean of the Graduate School, unveiled the School of International Communication. Lu Liu, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Journalism of Fudan University, presided over the opening ceremony of the forum.
As one of the organizers of this forum, under the care and guidance of the Ministry of Education and the strong promotion of the university's Party Committee's high-level planning, the School of International Communication of Fudan University, as a secondary entity interdisciplinary institution of the university, integrates the university's disciplines and talent forces related to international communication, and coordinates the organized cultivation of talents, organized scientific research, and organized services from multiple perspectives such as politics, economy, culture, society, and ecological civilization. Relying on the "1+8+N" open collaborative education system, it has created a new paradigm for international communication talent cultivation with in-depth interdisciplinary integration. The college adheres to the four "integrations" (diversified integration, integration of undergraduate and graduate education, integration of recruitment, cultivation, and employment, integration of teaching and learning) and the four "combinations" (combination of theory and practice, combination of international and communication, combination of research and teaching, combination of domestic and overseas) as its cultivation characteristics, and has newly designed 17 characteristic graduate training programs, shifting the basic unit of talent cultivation from the traditional discipline to the project system. The college brings together multiple departments and scientific research units within the university, and forms a new pattern of talent cultivation with complementary advantages and resource sharing through mechanisms such as interdisciplinary consultation, project co-construction, and dual-appointment of teachers.
02 Academic and Industry Circles Jointly Discuss International Communication Talent Cultivation and Research Innovation
Gao Xiaohong, Director of the National Teaching Steering Committee for Journalism and Communication and Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication at Communication University of China, discussed the adherence to principles and innovation in the practice of cultivating international journalism and communication talents with Chinese characteristics in her speech. Zhou Yong, Dean of the School of Journalism at Renmin University of China, delivered a speech on the theme of "Construction of an Ecological System for Cultivating Leading Talents in International Communication for Diverse Application Scenarios". Zhou Qing'an, Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication at Tsinghua University, expressed his views on the paths and methods to achieve precise international communication. Liang Hai, Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, elaborated on the theme of "Cross-Border Two-Way Empowerment Training Model for International Communication Talents". Wang Yuehua, Deputy Director of the English Global Program Center of China Media Group and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of CGTN, discussed the new trends and strategies in international communication. Su Changhe, Dean of the School of International Relations and Public Affairs at Fudan University, put forward insights on how to effectively conduct international communication of the independent knowledge system of Chinese social sciences. Sandro Jung, Distinguished Professor at the School of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Fudan University, delivered a speech on the topic of "Intercultural Communication and Cross-Media Narrative: Western Translation and Introduction of A Dream of Red Mansions in the 18th Century". Lu Tun, Deputy Dean of the School of Computing and Intelligent Innovation at Fudan University, elaborated on human-AI collaborative communication governance centered on people in his speech. Tang Jingtai, Professor at the Institute of Global Communication and Media at Fudan University and the School of Journalism at Fudan University, released the Report on the Network Influence of International Mainstream Media on behalf of the Institute of Global Communication and Media. Zhang Taofu, Dean of the School of Journalism at Fudan University and Executive Dean of the School of International Communication and Global Leadership at Fudan University, hosted the keynote speech session.
That afternoon, three sub-forums were held simultaneously. Scholars and experts attending the event mainly discussed topics such as "Cultivation of International Communication Talents", "Innovation in International Communication Practice", and "International Communication in the Intelligent Era: Theory and Experience". This provided important references for deepening theoretical research on international communication and innovating talent cultivation models, and contributed wisdom and strength to building an independent knowledge system for international communication research.

The school's name is derived from the line "The sun and moon shine brightly, day after day" in The Great Commentary on the Book of Documents. Founded in 1905 as Fudan Public School, it was renamed Fudan University in 1917, making it the first higher education institution independently founded by Chinese people. The predecessor of Shanghai Medical University was the National Fourth Zhongshan University School of Medicine, established in 1927. In 2000, Fudan University merged with Shanghai Medical University to form the new Fudan University.
