The final of the 8th "FLTRP Cup" National College Students' Intercultural Competence Competition (Shanghai Division) was held at Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press on November 8-9. This year, our university once again sent two teams to compete in the international student group and Chinese student group respectively, winning the Special Prize and First Prize respectively, and both advancing to the national competition.
The international student team consists of Malaysian international student JOCELYN FAN ENG YUE (Fan Enyu), an undergraduate of 2024 Clinical Medicine (Six-Year Program); Indonesian international student CLEMENT You Lianzhong, an undergraduate of 2022 Biotechnology; and Malaysian international student TEE KEN LONG (Zheng Jianlong), an undergraduate of 2024 Biological Science. The instructors are Lin Wei and Yi Jingxuan from the College English Teaching Department.
The Chinese student team is composed of three students: Lü Zhuoxuan (undergraduate of 2024 Economics [International Program]), Ma Ruiyang (undergraduate of 2024 German Language), and Hu Qizhen (undergraduate of 2025 Spanish Language). The instructors are Chen Kewei and Xi Kun from the College English Teaching Department.
In July this year, after the selection of the two groups' school trials organized by the English Speech and Debate Center of the School of Foreign Languages, the two teams were officially formed. Under the full cooperation and careful guidance of instructors Lin Wei and Yi Jingxuan, the international student team achieved remarkable progress and improvement in multiple dimensions, including case selection and in-depth development, on-site Q&A interaction, and in-depth interpretation of famous Chinese quotes. Moreover, the cohesion among team members was significantly enhanced during this process. Under the careful guidance of instructors Chen Kewei and Xi Kun, the Chinese student team started preparing for the competition from the summer vacation. They underwent four months of intensive training in various aspects such as topic selection, development and creation of intercultural cases, case Q&A, interpretation of famous quotes, and telling Chinese stories, comprehensively improving the team's intercultural theoretical and practical abilities, as well as overall strength and cooperation skills.
On the 9th, in the international group competition, our university's contestants stood out among all competitors in the three sections of case analysis presentation, on-site Q&A, and interpretation of famous Chinese quotes. They won with their creative topic selection, excellent Chinese expression ability, exquisite stage design, dynamic performance, and high teamwork. Finally, they won the Special Prize (First Place) without suspense and smoothly advanced to the national final, winning precious honor for our university. Instructors Lin Wei and Yi Jingxuan also won the Special Prize for Instructors.
In the semi-finals on the 8th, the Chinese group contestants advanced to the final after competing in three sections: pre-prepared intercultural case analysis, impromptu Q&A, and interpretation of famous intercultural quotes. In the final on the 9th, they once again achieved excellent performance in three sections: Q&A on Chinese and foreign cultural knowledge and intercultural theoretical knowledge, impromptu intercultural case commentary and Q&A, and telling Chinese stories. They won the First Prize (second place in total score) and smoothly qualified for the national final, once again demonstrating the team's interdisciplinary advantages and the contestants' comprehensive strengths in multiple aspects, including intercultural theoretical knowledge and practice, international vision, critical thinking ability, English language application ability, speech and communication skills. Instructors Chen Kewei and Xi Kun also won the First Prize for Instructors.
